Two days ago we put those cute little baby chicks out with the rest of the flock. They were born Feb 21, 22, and 26, so that makes those three cuties about 4 weeks old. Late last night we had to trudge outside in the rain and cold to scoop them up from a little hiding place they found behind the hen house and lock them inside, the Roo's were not happy, but risking no chance on losing these babies to a fox! All is going well even though they haven't accepted, nor been accepted by, the others as of yet. I have also left some 14 eggs in a nest to encourage the hens to go broody, no luck so far but i am not giving up easily!
Our daughter turned 8 this month also! We made a really cute horse cake! I will go into details on the design of this cake in a separate post for those who would like to give it a try for their own little cowgirl, or cowboy! Two years ago we did the same pan design, only as a unicorn. I will include those instructions as well.
This year we are planting by the moon cycles. The Farmer's Almanac has a free guide that shows you when to plant in your area by the cycle of the moon. (http://www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-dates) Its easy to use, just enter your location and leave the guesswork out of it! We just started our squashes, summer and winter, and cukes under the grow lights!
We also set out onion sets in the garden and the garlic is coming up nicely - the latter i planted last fall. Our peas became lunch for the crows and the squirrels, my fault for not preparing as fully as i should have....lesson learned :) I can't wait to get my hands dirty in the garden!
i also need to get those rain barrels completed......
And......finally (almost) drum roll please..... GOATS!!!! i have placed my claim on two little baby goats that were born on Friday, March 19. One tiny little female and a male, which will be castrated by the farmer free of charge for me, will be coming home this Saturday. We are all so excited for these new additions!
Our goat house is ready and waiting and the fence is up, just got to get that gate done - will get my trusty man servant to tackle that this week when he takes a break from helping me move our borrowed rabbit hutch into place..... that's another project i will go into in more depth at another time.
